Somalia expresses gratitude to Turkey for ongoing security support
The statement followed talks in Mogadishu between Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and a senior Turkish delegation.
“Prime Minister Hamza expressed deep gratitude to the government and people of Türkiye for their unwavering support, describing Türkiye as a strategic partner that has played a vital role in bolstering Somalia’s security, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” the prime minister’s office said after the meeting.
The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, strengthening security cooperation, combating terrorism, and promoting stability in the Horn of Africa.
The Turkish delegation was led by Ali Onaner, director of the Africa Department at Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and included Türkiye’s Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktas. Onaner reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to Somalia and pledged to further strengthen the collaborative relationship between the two countries.
The visit comes amid regional tensions following Israel’s recognition of Somalia’s breakaway Somaliland region on December 26. Israel became the only country to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent state, drawing widespread criticism across the region.
Somalia reiterated its firm commitment to sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity, rejecting the Israeli decision. Somaliland has operated as a de facto self-governing entity since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not received international recognition as a sovereign state.
